Connecting to an ActivHub

What you do next depends on your network configuration, and on whether you are installing ActivEngage for the first time, or upgrading an existing ActivEngage installation.

On new installations using Distributed Directory Network mode, you can skip the following tasks. This is because you are automatically connected to the default ActivHub that was created during installation.

The following table describes in which circumstances you need to complete each task.

Only required if both of the following apply:

  • You are installing ActivEngage Server for the first time

  • You are using Centralised Directory Network mode with multiple ActivHubs

Setting up a manual connection

Only required if your organisation does not use Atlas Server or Distributed Directory Network mode

Choosing an ActivHub to connect to

If your organisation uses Centralised Directory Network mode with multiple ActivHubs, making a connection is simple. ActivManager can detect which ActivHubs are available. All you have to do is choose which ActivHub you want to connect to.

  1. Click ActivManager   and select Control Panel from the Context Menu. ActivManager opens.

 

  1. Select the ‘Connections’ tab.

 

  1. Click Manage Connections. The ‘ActivEngage Server Connections’ dialog opens. It shows all available ActivHubs.

 

  1. Check the ‘Selected’ box next to your chosen ActivHub and click Apply.

Two things happen:

 You can use the horizontal scrollbar to see more information about the ActivHub.

Setting up a manual connection

If your organisation does not use Atlas Server or Distributed Directory Network mode, you need to complete some additional steps to connect.

  1. Click ActivManager  and select Control Panel from the Context Menu. ActivManager opens.

  1.  Select the ‘Connections’ tab.

  1. Click Manage Connections. The ‘ActivEngage Server Connections’ dialog opens. If you have not set up any manual connections before, the list is empty.

  1. Click Personal Address List and select Add New Address. The ‘Add a virtual hub’ dialog opens.

Ensure that you have the correct information before you enter the following details:

Hub Name

Name given to the ActivHub in the ‘Classroom Server Control’ dialog.

Server Name

Name given to the computer at installation.  This is also known as the netbios or host name, and must also be localhost. (Required)

Server IP Address

External IP address of the server computer. (Optional)

Virtual Hub Port

Available from the server menu ( defaults are 9192 and 9193 respectively)

Virtual Device Port

For example:

  1. When you have entered the details, click OK. A confirmation dialog opens.

  2. Click Yes. The ‘ActivEngage Server Connections’ dialog now shows the ActivHub you created. At this point the ActivHub is not yet connected.

  1. Check the ‘Selected’ box next to the ActivHub and click Apply.

If the details you entered in the ‘Add a virtual hub’ dialog are correct, two things happen:

You can use the horizontal scrollbar to see more information about the ActivHub.

If the ActivHub is highlighted in:

Select the ActivHub, click Personal Address List and select Edit Selected Address, enter the correct information and click OK, then go back to Step 4.

When you have successfully connected to the server, two things happen:

  1. Click Exit to close the dialog.
